UL94 testing methods

UL 94 is one of the most important UL regarding fire safety test method and one of the important standard. He is particularly important for plastics used in electrical industry, the test method is based on UL institute on the properties of flame retardant plastic, not only suitable for electrical industry, also apply to many other areas.
The method for flame retardant plastics include: flame retardant polypropylene PP, flame retardant polyethylene PE, fire-retardant PVC, flame retardant polystyrene PS, flame retardant high impact polystyrene HIPS, ABS, PMMA, and flame retardant poly (methyl methacrylate flame-retardant polyamide 6 pa6, flame retardant polyamide 66 pa66, flame retardant polyamide 46 pa46, flame retardant polycarbonate (PC), flame retardant poly (butyl glycol terephthalate plastic PBT and flame retardant polyethylene terephthalate plastic PET, flame retardant plastic modified polyphenyl ether MPPO, PPS plastics PPS, flame retardant plastic polysulfone PSF, flame retardant polyether ether ketone plastics PEEK, flame retardant, fluoroplastics PVDF plastic flame retardant polyimide PI, flame retardant LCD LCP plastic, bakelite PF flame retardant, flame retardant epoxy plastic EP, flame retardant unsaturated polyester plastic UPE, flame retardant polyurethane plastic, flame retardant melamine plastic, flame retardant urea-formaldehyde plastics, and other blending plastics and modified plastics.
At present, UL 94 standard has been widely used around the world, used in the test method of the plastic flame retardant. UL 94 flame retardant performance test including the following plastic horizontal and vertical combustion:
1 UL 94 HB level fire test;
UL 94 V 2-0, UL UL 94 V and 94 V - 1-2 vertical burning test;
3 UL 94 5 v vertical burning test;
4 UL 94 VTM0 UL94VTM1 and UL 94 VTM2 plastic film vertical burning test;
5 UL 94 HBF, UL 94 HF1 and UL 94 HF2 foam level fire test;
A, vertical combustion
UL 94 V - 0, 1-2 V - 1, V (hierarchies: where V0 > V1 > V2)
Applicable products: self supporting materials;
Sample size: 15 pieces with the size of (125 + 5) x (13 + 0, 2) mmX thickness (need to provide test the minimum thickness of the sample and the maximum thickness of samples, sample thickness is less than 13 mm, if the minimum thickness of the sample and the maximum thickness of the sample results are not consistent, would also need to provide the sample size, middle size thickness span up to 3.2 mm)
Testing is introduced: the specimen vertically, starting from the specimen bottom light (because the upper specimen can be bottom heat of combustion preheating, and therefore more demanding than HB rating) test in the laboratory burner flame 20 mm, 2 times, each time 10 s, lit for the first time sample back go applying for the second time after self-extinguishing fire such as fire;
Relevant test method: UL94:1997, ASTM D3801-00, IEC 606095-11-20.
Evaluation method:
V - 2: flame removed after each sample two bright burning time is less than 30 s, five sample Ming combustion total time not more than 10 times the 250 s; H for the source of each specimen after removing the second ShiYan Ming and smoldering combustion time after time is not greater than 60 s, drop light cotton;
V - 1: light cotton without melting, other conditions and V - 2;
V - 0: flame removed after each sample two bright time less than 10 s, five sample Ming combustion total time not more than 10 times 50 s; H for the source of each specimen after removing the second ShiYan Ming and smoldering combustion time after time not more than 30 s, no drop light cotton;
2 UL 94 5 va, vb (horizontal burning)
Applicable products: self supporting material;
Sample size: 15 pieces with (125 + 5) X X (13 + / - 0.5) mm minimum thickness AND 10 pieces 150 + 5 X 150 + / - 5 mm X minimum thickness (maximum thickness is less than 13 mm);
Testing is introduced: like UL 94 V combustion test, just need to put flame, 5 times test method includes vertical rod sample to test (A law) and flake sample test method (B);
Method: A vertical suspension sample, flame and lead straight into 20 degrees on fire in the bottom, on fire 5 times, each time 5 s, two 5 s time interval;
B method: sample in horizontal, flame and lead straight into 20 degrees on fire in central Angle on specimens under five times, each time 5 s, two 5 s time interval;
Test method: UL, 94:94, ASTM D5048, ISO1035;
Evaluation method:
5 va: five times the samples after 5 seconds of combustion test, residual flame and burning out in 60 seconds, low particle, not light cotton samples may be burning through;
Vb: five times the samples after 5 seconds of combustion test, residual flame and burning out in 30 seconds, low particle, not light cotton sample is not permitted to wear on fire.
Note: the sample meet 5 va or vb material, should also meet the V - 0, V - 1, V - 2 requirements;
3 UL 94 VTM0 VTM - 1, VTM - 2
Applicable products: soft plastic film;
Sample size: 15 pieces (200 + 5) X (plus or minus 1) 50 mm X thickness (minimum thickness and the maximum thickness to provide, so that we can think the test result for the whole series of effective thickness, but when the minimum thickness and the maximum thickness of the test results are inconsistent, the thickness of the middle will provide);
Testing is introduced: the wide film around the diameter to 12.7 MM round rods, the marking on the 127 MM, vertical clamp, the sample from the lower part on two flame, every time 3 s, the second after the first applying self-extinguishing immediately;
Test method: UL, 94:94, ASTM D4804-03, ISO 9773-9773
Evaluation method:
VTM - 0: a single sample twice Ming always time less than or equal to 10 s, 5 samples of 10 Ming total time does not exceed 50 s, no drop light cotton, specimen does not burn mark to 127 mm, the ignition source removed, a single sample bright flame burning with time is not greater than 30 s (second ShiYan);
VTM - 1: a single sample twice Ming always time less than or equal to 30 s, five samples of Ming combustion total time not more than 10 times the 250 s, no drop light cotton, specimen does not burn mark to 127 mm, the ignition source removed, a single sample bright flame burning with time is not greater than 60 s (second ShiYan);
VTM - 2: a single sample twice Ming always time less than or equal to 30 s, five samples of Ming combustion total time not more than 10 times the 250 s, drop light cotton, specimen does not burn mark to 127 mm, the ignition source removed, a single sample bright flame burning with time is not greater than 60 s (second ShiYan);
Second, the level of combustion
1 UL94 HB
Applicable products: self supporting material;
Sample size: 10 pieces with the size of (125 + 5) X X (13 + 0, 2) mm thickness (need to provide the minimum thickness of the sample and thickness of 3 mm samples, if the sample is greater than the minimum thickness of 3 mm, or a maximum thickness less than 3 mm, 3 mm can not provide samples, sample thickness is less than 13 mm, maximum width less than 13.5 mm,);
Test method: UL 94:1997, ASTM D635-03, IEC 60695-11-10 (2003);
Testing is introduced: the sample is in horizontal, marking 25 mm and 100 mm respectively, fire flame in its head into a 45 degree Angle (20 mm) flame high 30 s, such as flame cutting edge in front of the 30 s to 25 mm marker, remove the fire.
Evaluation method:
HB level 40: after ignition source removed, sample the halogen-light, flame front self-extinguishing before 100 mm markers, and specimen between two markers burning rate no more than 40 mm/S;
HB level 75: after the ignition source removed, sample the halogen-light, flame front self-extinguishing before 100 mm markers, and sample combustion rate between the two tags do not exceed 75 mm/S;
2 UL94 HBF, HBF - 1, HBF - 2
Applicable products: plastic foam;
Sample size: 15 pieces (150 + 5) X (plus or minus 1) 50 mm X thickness (to provide the minimum thickness and the maximum thickness, when the maximum thickness and the minimum thickness of the test results, is also to provide the thickness of the middle, interval of not more than 6 mm, specimen width not more than 50 mm);
Test method: UL94:1997, ASTM D4986-03 (foam), IEC 60695-11-10 (2003), ISO 3852-2003 (soft foam);
Testing is introduced: the specimens of 25 mm, 60 mm, 120 mm for your reference tag, wing top nozzle of the fire on placed at the side of the screen on the foam, put fire to 60 s, the determination of the rate of burning along the specimen;
Evaluation method:
UL 94 HBF: 25 mm and 125 mm between two tags material burning rate not more than 40 mm/MIN, or in front of the 125 mm markers self-extinguishing, but do not conform to the UL 94 and UL 94 HF HF - 1-2 requirements;
UL 94 HF - 1: a set of 5 specimens of at least four Ming time less than or equal to 2 s, any a specimen of the combustion time may not exceed 10 s. After 60 mm tag sample failed to destroy. After you remove ignition source, or after 60 mm markers, specimen
Burning time no more than 30 s, no drop;
HF UL 94-2: a set of 5 specimens of at least four Ming time less than or equal to 2 s, any a specimen of the combustion time may not exceed 10 s. After 60 mm tag sample failed to destroy. After you remove ignition source, or after 60 mm markers, specimen
